"RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is an XML-based format for sharing and distributing Web content." That's the technical definition out of the way. So what does that actually mean? Well, normally you have to trawl around all of your favourite websites to check if there is anything new of interest to read. Quite often you may find that your visit was in vain and you have just wasted a bit more of your precious time. If only you could gather the headlines from your favourite websites into one place. Then you could see if anything new had been published and if it was worth visiting the website to read.

What is an RSS Reader or Aggregator?

In order to read and collate RSS Feeds, you need an RSS Reader or Aggregator. This can be a program that you install onto your computer or it can come in the form of a website. Each software will have its own method of adding a feed, but in general you will need to view the feed then select the URL from the address bar of your browser. This URL can then be pasted into the 'Add Feed' or equivalent in your preferred software. Depending on which Browser you use, you may be presented with buttons to simplify the process of adding a feed. So which software is the best?

Which Reader / Aggregator should I use?

There are many different options to choose from. Website programs allow you to read your feeds from anywhere you can get connected to the internet, whereas programs installed on your computer will store the feeds in a similar way to email in programs like MS Outlook.
